2 int’l funding agencies pick Guimaras for new projects

January 8th, 2009 by Site Administrator

The province of Guimaras was chosen as pilot area by two international funding agencies for their new projects this year.

Gov. Felipe Hilan Nava said the province is a recipient of a grant under the Australia-Philippines Assistance Strategy 2007-Southern Philippines Road Maintenance Program, and the Local Economic Development (LED) program of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

This Australian government overseas aid program is being managed by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and will run for four years.

Nava said only seven provinces were chosen for the project: five in Mindanao and two in Visayas to include Bohol and Guimaras.

“Tentatively, the project will commence in April. Guimaras is expected to receive some P40 million a year for road maintenance in the next four years from Australia,” he said.

The P40-million grant is expected to increase up to P80 million in 2010 if the province will do well in the implementation of the project.

The project will cover only maintenance of provincial roads.

Meanwhile, the LED program is expected to commence anytime this January or February.

Guimaras, according to Nava, was chosen to become a recipient of the eight-year assistance to strengthen small and medium enterprises and other economic initiatives at the local level.
