Wind to energize Guimaras

January 6th, 2009 by Site Administrator

INDEPENDENT power producer TransAsia is bent on pursuing a wind-power energy project that can generate around 15 to 20 megawatts for Guimaras, said Gov. Felipe Hilan Nava.

The project, if realized, will supply the island-province with more than enough power, he added.

Guimaras may even sell its excess power supply to Iloilo, Nava said.

The province is currently dependent on the power provided by the National Power Corp. and the TransAsia.

The current power rate is pegged at P10 per kilowatt hour because TransAsia is using bunker fuel. Wind power will usher in cheaper rates, said Nava.

Meanwhile, the governor is hoping that the P300-million fund that the province has requested (included in the Typhoon “Frank” budget) will push through so that the old submarine cable that connects Guimaras to Napocor’s power plant in Iloilo will finally be replaced.

The submarine cable has been damaged, causing power deficit in the province.
