THE PROTECTED Areas Wildlife Coastal Zone Management Service (PAWCZMS) here confirmed the presence of Tabon bird or Mega Podius Posillus Species commonly known as scrub fowl in Taklong Island, Guimaras.

Vilma G. Limates, OIC-chief of the Coastal Marine Management Division (CMMD) of PAWCZMS, said teams from the San Roque Coastal Environment Program Association (SARCEPA) and the Lapaz Coastal Development Association (LACODA) caught one Tabon bird in the area just recently.

The two people’s organizations were commissioned by the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV), which was tapped by the DENR to catch species of the scrub fowl relative to the proposed rehabilitation of the bird’s habitat in Taklong Island.

Limates said they were commissioned to confirm that there are still species of the said rare marine bird in Taklong Island amidst information that there are already none.

Some 15 hectares of the island have been home to various endangered species including the Tabon bird that were affected by the oil spill that happened in 2006. Philippine News Agency
