DENR to plant 2,000 mangrove seedlings in Tando

September 27th, 2007 by Site Administrator

More or less 2,000 mangrove seedlings will be planted in Barangay Tando, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras on September 27 to signal the regional launching of the Green Philippines Program in Western Visayas.

Barangay Tando is the area directly hit by the Petron oil spill in August last year.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Executive Director Lormelyn Claudio said the activity, which will be graced by Undersecretary Tess Castillo, is a show of force.

Some 50 government agencies confirmed their participation. The private sector and business groups expressed their support as well.

Claudio said they bank on community participation for the success of the program.

Tree planting is one of the options or mitigating measures to lessen the impact of climate change which has already affected the country, Claudio said.

The mangrove and coastal planting is also part of the DENR’s rehabilitation program in Guimaras after the oil spill incident in 2006. (DENR)
